Immunological Unresponsiveness in Adult Rats to the Nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis induced by Infection in Early Life

Abstract

ALTHOUGH it is known that mature animals may develop a marked degree of acquired immunity to infection with many species of parasitic nematodes1,2 the occurrence of immunological unresponsiveness in adult animals, either under field or experimental conditions, has not been definitely established. Observations resulting from experiments with Mesistocirrus digitatus in calves3 and Haemonchus contortus in sheep4 indicated the possible occurrence of tolerance in these infections and formed the basis for a series of experiments with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis—a parasite of rats.
