Abstract
THE production of tumour cells in certain mammalian systems by carcinogenic agents stimulated considerable interest in testing the effects of these compounds on other kinds of cells. Micro-organisms, because of their apparently simpler structure and their adaptability to growth under controlled cultural conditions, have been repeatedly used in such assays. For different bacteria, yeasts, or moulds carcinogens have been reported: (a) to produce large and sometimes abnormal cells1; (b) to inhibit early phases in the growth curve2; (c) to increase the total number of cells in cultures3; (d) to be involved in photodynamic lethal effects4; (e) to induce mutations5.
