Toxicity of Some n-Alkyl Bromides to Larvæ of the Citrus Nematode

Abstract

THE toxicity of allylic and acetylenic halides to larvae of the citrus nematode has been shown to be related to their reactivities in the bimolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction (SN2) with potassium iodide in acetone1, which suggested that these compounds kill by combining irreversibly with essential nucleophilic centres, such as sulphydryl groups, in the nematode. Other factors which were also involved in the toxicity of these halides were their rates of hydrolysis in water and the toxicities of the resulting alcohols.
