Responses of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) to Changes of Hydrostatic Pressure

Abstract

MANY planktonic species show marked responses to changes in hydrostatic pressure1–3, but there has been some doubt about the behaviour of Calanus in this respect. Field observations by Hardy and Paton4 suggested that the behaviour of Calanus finmarchicus might be affected by the change of pressure with depth, but laboratory experiments by Hardy and Bainbridge1 and by Knight-Jones and Qasim2 failed to confirm this. Recent books and reviews5–10 have stressed the apparent absence of a demonstrable pressure response in Calanus.
