Polymorphism of α1-Acid Glycoprotein

Abstract

α1-ACID glycoprotein1,2, a human plasma protein of low molecular weight, has been prepared in a state of extremely high purity as evidenced by electrophoresis and ultracentrifugation over a pH range of 1–12 and by terminal amino-acid and immuno-chemical analyses. Starch-gel electrophoresis of this blood constituent at pH 8.5 according to Smithies3,4 also demonstrated homogeneity. α1-Acid glycoprotein is further distinguished by the unusually low isoelectric point reported to be at pH 2.7 and the high carbohydrate content accounting for 40 per cent and consisting of sialic acid, galactose, mannose, fucose and N-acetyl-glucosamine.
