Oxidation of Human Hæmoglobin by Vitamin K3

Abstract

PREVIOUS work in this laboratory has given support to the conclusion that the brain lesion in neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy or kernicterus is primarily due to a toxic effect of free bilirubin on cellular energy metabolism1. Hæmolytic diseases in new-born children, resulting in severe hyperbilirubinæmia, may therefore lead to the development of kernicterus, regardless of the cause of the hæmolysis.
