Abstract
THE frequent assumption that bacterial spores are impermeable and thereby metabolically dormant, unstainable and resistant to environmental stress has not heretofore been tested by experiment. We have attempted to examine this problem using clean, dormant, thermostable spores of a common aerobic bacterium, Bacillus cereus strain terminalis.
