Abstract
WHEN tert.-butylbenzene is mono-nitrated the main product is the para isomer; but toluene gives largely the ortho1–3. Again, when p-tert.-butyltolaene is dinitrated, 4-tert.-butyl-2 : 6-dinitrotoluene is formed4. Substitution ortho to the tert.-butyl group is clearly hindered by the steric effect of this large group1,2.
