Abstract
IT is well known that the seeds of many angio-sperms retain their power of germination for a considerable period, sometimes exceeding a hundred years. As an extreme case, it has been reported recently1,2 that the viable seeds of Nelumbo, obtained by Ohga3 from the bed of a dried-out Manchurian lake, are approximately a thousand years old.
