Abstract
PROCEEDING from the assumption that both the proton and the neutron are of elementary nature, D. Iwanenko1 concludes that the sum of the binding energies of the proton and the neutron equals 2mc2 (where m is the mass of the electron) and that the difference between these quantities cannot exceed mc2, hence the mass defect of the neutron (or proton) cannot exceed this value.
