An internet database on genetics in oncology

There is a need for databases collecting and summarizing the knowledge accumulated (and fast growing) from researchers and clinicians in medicine. For instance, about 300 different hematologic malignancies can be classified according to a given chromosome aberration, implying a given prognosis (Mitelman et al., 1998, 2001, 2001; Huret, 2001). The ‘Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology’ http://www.infobiogen.fr/services/chromcancer (Huret et al., 2001) is a database in free access on Internet devoted to chromosome abnormalities in cancer (leukemias and solid tumors), cancer-prone diseases, and genes involved in cancer, with data on the diseases and their prognoses. It presents information in the form of concise and updated reviews (cards). Contributions are reviewed before acceptance.

Site presentation: (1) Cards on genes include data on DNA/RNA, protein, mutations, and diseases where this gene is implicated. Cytogenetic/clinical entities cards include clinics and prognosis, cytogenetics, genes/proteins involved, hybrid gene, and fusion protein. Cancer-prone diseases cards include inheritance, phenotype, neoplastic risk, prognosis, cytogenetic condition, genes/proteins, germinal, and somatic mutations. Cards also comprise a bibliography with hyperlinks to Medline, and hyperlinks towards other databases, which makes it easy to access a gene, its nucleotide sequence, its amino-acid content, and available probes. (2) A very large and up-to-date portal has also been developed with hyperlinks towards the other actors of the genome program, and those concerned with cancer. This is our contribution to the network. Reciprocally, important databases such as HUGO, Swiss-Prot, GeneCards, HGMD, and International Union against Cancer include extensive hyperlinks to the Atlas. (3) Educational items in genetics are being developed as well.
