Systolic blood pressure and cardiac mortality over 24 years after venous coronary bypass surgery

Post- operative systolic blood pressure, but not pre-operative systolic blood pressure, has a strong predictive value on very long-term clinical outcome after venous coronary bypass surgery. Especially blood pressure 5 years after surgery is a major determinant of cardiac mortality. Therefore it is important to monitor and control systolic blood pressure in the initial years after surgery.

The most important pre- and per-operative determinants of long-term clinical outcome after coronary bypass surgery are left ventricular (dys)function, incomplete revascularization, age and left main coronary artery stenosis.1, 2
