This conference will be organised under the patronage of UNESCO and EUSJA (European Union of Science Journalists' Associations).

SCOPE
The aim of the World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) is a competent and responsible contribution to shaping the future in the next millennium in terms of spreading scientific knowledge and information, to strengthen the importance of the science communication in the media, to review the recent progress in the East and in the West, to find new ways and models of science journalism in the Age of Informatics.

STRUCTURE AND THEMES

Plenary Sessions of invited speakers' presentation will run every morning, in the following topics:

  • The living planet in the XXI. Century with or without science - and the role of journalists
  • The assistance of the science journalists to orientate in the world of the fast advancing technology
  • Selling science
  • Independence of selling science in the profit-oriented world
  • Ten years after - peak, depression and now? - the model of science journalism in the post-communist countries
  • Importance of the science reporting in the developing countries
  • Science online - borders and doors in the changing opportunities of information infrastructure
  • Who should report about science - scientists, journalists or science journalists?
  • The responsible role - ethical risks of science journalism
  • Image of science journalism from the scientist side
  • Importance of the recruitment
Afternoon Parallel Workshops and Panels will include presentations selected by the International Program Committee from the abstracts submitted in the following topics:
  • Popularisation of science: risks and benefits
  • Out from the Ghetto: science in the non-scientific media
  • Handling the fear of science
  • Science journalism skills and models
  • Elitism or degradation - science journalism from the Nature to the popular magazines - the role of the leading journals (Science, Nature, etc.) and its effects
  • Science journalism in the Television
  • Science in the Broadcasting
  • Green and science (environmental topics and the science journalism)
  • Science journalist courses
  • Fraternity or rivalry - importance of the connection between science journalists - panel discussion with leading science journalists /Panel/
  • Meeting of young science journalists /Panel/
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Prospective speakers of workshops are being invited to submit a one page abstract in two copies to the Conference Secretariat until 15 February 1999. The abstract should clearly contain: the title; list of authors (including address, fax, e-mail of the corresponding author); abstract (not exceeding 1,500 characters); your preference of workshops

The World Conference of Science Journalists will take place immediately after the World Conference on Science (http://www.unesco.org). Participants of our Conference may also attend the WCS.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The Organizing Committee is in the process of fundraising for the Conference. Workshop speakers and participants from CEE countries may apply for financial support (waiving the registration fee and/or accommodation fee). Their request to be granted should be indicated on the Preliminary Reply Card. Speakers will be notified of the acceptance of their paper in March 1999. The Second Announcement & Preliminary Program will be attached. For applicants, the decision on their financial support will also be included with that mail.
