Exercise and chronic kidney disease: potential mechanisms underlying the physiological benefits

This Review discusses the potential mechanisms by which regular exercise has beneficial effects on chronic inflammation, cardiovascular health, lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, sarcopenia and bone health in people with kidney disease. The authors highlight areas for further investigation to enhance the benefits of exercise for this population.

The protective effect of relative carbohydrate intake on depression

Elucidating potentially causal factors for depression and the direction of their impact could beneficially inform prevention strategies. Mendelian randomization revealed the protective role of increased relative carbohydrate intake in lowering depression risk. In addition, body mass index mediated this effect but to a lesser extent than the total effect size.

Mediterranean diet superior to low-fat diet for secondary prevention of CVD

Dietary interventions can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. According to the CORDIOPREV study, a Mediterranean-style diet is superior to a low-fat diet in preventing major cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease.
