ARI 2023 Call for Proposals

Deadline for proposals: November 5th, 2021

The Editors-in-Chief of Pediatric Research announce the topic of the 2023 Annual Review Issue, entitled “The Emerging role of big data analysis in pediatrics.”

Big data are extremely large datasets, such as minute-to-minute monitoring of vital signs, “omics” data (e.g., genomics, metabolomics, proteomics), environmental and lifestyle-related factors, socio-demographics, and data from standardized electronic health records (EHRs) or precision medicine platforms. The significance of the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in Pediatric Medicine such as machine learning, deep learning, and cognitive computing is emerging. Big data analysis by AI may facilitate identification of novel genotypes or phenotypes leading to personalized, targeted therapy, support clinical decision tools and identify unknown risk factors for childhood diseases. Researchers and clinicians have thus far relied on single dimensional clinical or research data. The use of big data harnessed by AI has huge implications for research and precision medicine.

For this review issue of Pediatric Research, the editors seek review articles examining the critical roles of AI, big data analysis and precision medicine that will set the stage for the future of Pediatrics and innovative research in the field.

This is an excellent opportunity for junior faculty to pair up with senior mentors to develop these reviews! Please note that standard publication page fees are waived for manuscripts included in the Annual Review Issue! Letters of intent should include a proposed title and be sent to info@pedres.org by the deadline. Please include “ARI 2023 Proposal” in the subject line.

2022 Editor Apprenticeship Program

Deadline for nominations: October 30th, 2021

The Editors-in–Chief of Pediatric Research are excited to announce our fourth year of the Editorial Apprenticeship program. This program is designed for early career investigators to gain experience and develop skills necessary for membership on an editorial board. Dr. Bearer and Dr. Molloy will be selecting two individuals each year to participate in this new program. The selectees will be invited to join the Editorial Board meeting at a PAS meeting and/or an EAPS/jENS meeting, travel expenses covered. Exemplary Editorial Apprentices may be invited to join the Editorial Board after their completion of the apprenticeship program.

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Academic rank at the Associate Professor Level or higher
  2. Has published more than 25 peer reviewed articles
  3. Has reviewed for Pediatric Research (Alternately: has reviewed more than 10 articles.)
  4. Membership in APS, ESPR, or SPR preferred

Please submit nomination detailing the above information and CV to info@pedres.org and note that the nomination is for the 2022 Editor Apprenticeship Program.

"Social Determinants Meets Precision Medicine”(June 2020) webinar

The social determinants of health are the economic and social conditions that influence individual and group differences in health status in contrast to individual risk factors such as genetics that is the focus of precision medicine. What if models existed that took into account both the social as well as the genetic determinants of health? A recent flurry of articles in Pediatric Research address this issue, ranging from social support and maternal DNA methylation, early life antecedents of positive child health, and cumulative psychosocial risk in global health research.

COVID-19 Call For Papers

COVID-19 remains a rapidly evolving and thus fluid disease. In the absence of timely, valid, and pertinent information, many clinicians worldwide are inadequately informed and insufficiently prepared to help manage this new disease.

The Editors-in-Chief of Pediatric Research are soliciting papers addressing the mechanisms of disease in COVID-19. In particular, we are seeking data driven submissions of original research including basic translational research, trials and outcomes studies, narrative reviews, and eventually, systematic reviews and meta-analyses related to COVID-19.

These COVID-19 related papers will be immediately made available as free access content and widely disseminated via our Journal website and PubMed and all publication charges will be waived.

Submissions can be made through ScholarOne at https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/prjournal and please note that submission does not guarantee peer review or eventual acceptance. Please indicate in your cover letter that you are submitting in response to the call for COVID-19 papers.

  • We are automatically sending the World Health Organization (WHO) all published research, on a rolling basis, that is directly relevant to the outbreak.
  • We urge all authors of relevant research to share preprints of their submitted papers on a recognized preprint server and to release all data, code and protocols associated with their research to a recognized community repository.  Such deposition should please not affect the consideration or publication process of submitted manuscripts.  
    • If you have not already deposited a preprint and are seeking a suggestion for a preprint server, our affiliates at Research Square offer the Research Square preprint platform.
  • If you need help depositing and curating your research data (including raw and processed data, text, video, audio and images) you should consider:

The situation with the COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly changing with an ever expanding medical literature. In this quickly changing environment we encourage any input or suggestions that can be supported by the journal to provide resources for the healthcare community and families. 

We invite you to share your experience with COVID-19 whether in your personal or professional life. Our goal is to share this information rapidly with our readership and will expedite getting this information out. We are looking for both shorter anecdotes to share on our website and longer “correspondence” pieces to be published in the journal. All page charges will be waived and we will be setting these articles as freely accessible on our website.
