About the Partner

npj 2D Materials and Applications is part of the Nature Partner Journals series and is published by Springer Nature in partnership with the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT NOVA) with the support of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS).

Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT NOVA)

The Faculty of Sciences and Technology/Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, (FCT NOVA), Campus of Caparica, is one of the most prestigious Portuguese engineering and science public schools (500 faculties and 200 non-academic staff) enrolling 8000 students (80% MSc and PhD). Developing to a research oriented school FCT NOVA is engaged in extensive research activity through 16 R&D centres (4 of these units out of 11 in the all country were ranked “Exceptional” by the national Foundation for Science and Technology, out of 353 evaluated). Materials Science is one of those “Exceptional” units that has gained wide international reputation.

FCT NOVA partners with foreign universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Carnegie Mellon and the University of Texas at Austin to offer some of its advanced study programs. The entrepreneurial drive of the students and graduates of FCT NOVA has led to many successful spin-offs that transfer knowledge to the market and help create value and social impact.

European Materials Research Society (E-MRS)

Founded in Strasbourg in 1983 and legalized in 1985, the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) has become the largest conference organizer in Europe in the field of advanced functional materials. E-MRS has several thousand members from industry, government, academia and research laboratories, which meet regularly to debate recent technological developments during two large conferences in Spring (France) and Fall (Poland) with a total number of attendees exceeding 3,500. The major society conference, the annual E-MRS Spring Meeting, is held in May or June and offers an average of 25 topical symposia. It is widely recognized as being of the highest international significance and is the greatest of its kind in Europe. In addition, a significant number of workshops towards scientists, policy makers, industrial and the general public, as well as and educational activities (e.g. Summer schools, tutorials) are organized by the society. Apart from that, E-MRS promotes studies for policy makers and stakeholders as well as outreach and advocacy to promote the field of advanced functional materials, including the exploitation of materials and processes at a nanoscale fore a plethora of field applications.
