Sustainable communities

As a consequence of growing populations and more frequent climate change effects, urban and rural communities are increasingly under pressure to reduce their environmental impact and protect their citizens against socio-economic change and natural disasters. In order to overcome these challenges, the United Nations has set up the development of sustainable communities across the world as one of its main targets for 2030. Sustainable communities aim to achieve energy independence, as well as the effective and balanced use of natural resources, while maintaining productivity and preserving their cultural and natural heritage. These are key challenges to make an economy more resilient to change and allow citizens to be active participants in the green transition.

This Collection invites submissions of original research on sustainable communities, their impact, and the tools required to empower citizens, across different socio-economic spectra, to drive social change.

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 11 and SDG 12.
