All in all a great read.

I've been waiting a long time for a book designed for dental nurses assisting in the treatment of dental implants and I can honestly say it was definitely worth the wait. This handbag sized, colourfully illustrated book enabled me to read whenever I liked, admittedly with a few puzzled looks from passers-by.

…patients still want their teeth to feel and look as natural as possible, therefore a greater number of patients are opting for dental implants as a way of restoring their smile.

Due to makeover programmes such as ‘10 Years Younger’, patients are growing much more aware of their appearance, especially their teeth. Although dentures and bridgework have made a great improvement in appearance and functionality over the years patients still want their teeth to feel and look as natural as possible, therefore a greater number of patients are opting for dental implants as a way of restoring their smile.

The placement of dental implants, although specialised, is becoming a preferred treatment choice for patients and their dentist. This is why I feel that all dental nurses should read this book to familiarise themselves with implant treatment options and the many advantages it holds over bridge and denture work.

This book is a great stepping stone for anyone who wants to learn about dental implants. It is separated into eight short and easy to read chapters. It starts off with an insight into the history of dental implants dating back to the 1800s using hand-shaped ivory, wood and gold progressing to commercially pure titanium which is used today.

A number of implant systems such as Branemark and Straumann are discussed including the advantages of each system compared to the others. The fact that it talked about different methods in which they can be used dependent on the complexity of the case was a great advantage to me. This book has enabled me to extend my knowledge on the sinus lift procedure, ridge expansion, bone and soft tissue augmentation which has increased my understanding and has given me the confidence to talk about this with colleagues and patients.

The explanation into types of soft tissue and bone density I found to be very useful, allowing me to understand why the surgeon chooses the method for the implant placement, the implant system itself and the need for such careful and precise planning.

The pictures and diagrams were a great help in describing the different implant systems and the implant placement procedure, prosthetic options as well as the great and not so great aesthetic end results.

I will keep this book in the clinic for everyone to use.

This publication is also a great source to refer to when explaining to new members of the surgical team or even to patients. The glossary in the back enabled me to understand some of the terminology used by surgeons and dentists that we as dental nurses wouldn't normally use in general dentistry. I will keep this book in the clinic for everyone to use.

All in all a great read and I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to increase their knowledge and understanding on the benefits of dental implants.
