This is a textbook which should need no introduction since it has been in existence, in all its previous incarnations, since 1960. The author is undoubtedly able to write with a great deal of authority having now been appointed Emeritus Examiner to the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses. However, as is stated in the introduction, this edition ‘introduces the greatest changes since 1921, for all involved in the dental profession’. Future compulsory registration and continuing training of professionals complementary to dentistry means that books such as this one, which covers all aspects of dental nursing, provides essential – and up to date – reading for both those already involved in the profession and those embarking on training for initial certification. The book, as is to be expected in a new edition, also takes account of relatively recent changes such as the banning of general anaesthesia in general dental practice which have occured since the last (8th) edition was published in 1997. Weighing in at over 400 pages, this well-indexed textbook is simply a must for all practising and prospective dental nurses.
