1925–2017

George D. Jameson, the highly respected and admired Darlington dental surgeon, died peacefully on 4 May 2017, aged 91.

George was born in Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham in 1925, the third son of Andrew and Mary Jameson. Both his father and eldest brother, Eric, were well-known dental surgeons. Educated at Barnard Castle School, at 16 George gained a place at the Sutherland Dental School, King's College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne to study dentistry, when the college was part of Durham University. After graduating in 1948 he joined the Royal Army Dental Corps and served in Cyprus where he met his first wife Margaret Bradley.

Back in the UK, he established his own dental surgery at 12 Southend Avenue, Darlington, specialising in orthodontics, and ran it for 40 years until his retirement at 70. George was popular with his patients who liked his gentle manner and his debonair style. His care, attention to detail and skill as a dental surgeon earned him a wide reputation. He also ran a small business, Darlington Dental Supplies, providing materials to local dental surgeons. In 1967 and 1973 he worked as a locum in South Africa and then later in Zimbabwe in 1982.

In the 1970s he and his family moved to Ovington. An active member of Darlington Rotary, of which he became president, George also had a keen interest in photography, sports cars, golf and electronics. Margaret sadly died in 1978. Later he met and married Dorothy Normington and moved to Barnard Castle, Teesdale.

In retirement, George took up painting and became an accomplished artist. He continued to be involved in Rotary and in 2009 was made a Paul Harris Fellow, their highest award. In Teesdale, he started the local branch of the U3A (an interest organisation for active seniors), becoming the founding chairman in 2007. He travelled extensively with Dorothy and even in his ninety-first year enjoyed a trip to Lanzarote.

A committed family man, he will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
