First DCP cohort graduate from UHI

The first cohort of dental hygienist/therapists who have completed the BSc in Oral Health Science at the newly chartered University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) received their degrees at a graduation ceremony held in Inverness on 30 September.

New President for the ADI

The Association of Dental Implantology UK has welcomed Cemal Ucer as its new President. Professor Ucer, a specialist oral surgeon at the University of Salford, took over the Presidency of the ADI at the association's AGM on 12 November 2011. He has been an active member of the ADI Board since 2005.

Honorary Membership of BOS

Professor Tim Newton has been awarded Honorary Membership of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) in a ceremony at their annual conference on 26 September.

Professor Newton joins just 23 other honorary members awarded in recognition of their long and distinguished service to dentistry.

Person Services Marketing Award

Dunmurry Dental Practice in Belfast recently won the Person Services Marketing Award at the Chartered Institute of Marketing All Ireland Marketing Excellence Awards. With over 160 entries to 20 categories the award recognised Dunmurry Dental Practice's commitment to marketing its services.

Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry

Professor Nairn Wilson has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – the highest accolade of the Faculty. Professor Wilson, who is Dean of King's College London Dental Institute, was presented with the award at the Faculty's 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting.

BLOS Accredited Member

Lothar Huber, an orthodontic specialist from Peterborough, has become the first Accredited Member of the British Lingual Orthodontic Society (BLOS). Following the successful presentation of three cases, all of IOTN 4 or 5 and treated with upper and lower lingual appliances, he is now entitled to describe himself as BLOS Accredited and display a plaque in his practice.

Triple crown for Leeds

Trainees on the Leeds postgraduate orthodontic training course have received a trio of awards presented during the recent annual British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) in Harrogate: Sarabjit Nandhra was awarded the Research Protocol Award; Mark Allen was awarded the BOC Audit Poster prize; and Tumadher Al-Musfir won the BOC Research Poster prize.

MBE for orthodontist

Chris Kettler, Specialist Orthodontist and past Honorary Secretary of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), received an MBE from Her Royal Highness Princess Anne in November for his 45 years of service to orthodontics.
