Born in 1918 and educated at Dover Grammar School, Ted Cadman qualified at Guy's Hospital Dental School in 1941, during the height of the Blitz.

In May 1942, he joined the RNVR as a Temporary Surgeon Lieutenant (D) and, after experiencing more of the Blitz in Portsmouth, it was with some relief when later that year, he found himself embarked on SS Aquitania bound for the United States, where he was assigned to the busy dental clinic in a newly established RN training facility at Asbury Park, a small city in New Jersey.

Returning to the UK at the end of the war, in 1946 he joined the cruiser HMS Cumberland, deploying to the Far East, to help in the repatriation of British and Australian troops.

In 1947, Ted Cadman accepted an 'Extended Service Commission' and in August 1952, he transferred to the Permanent List of the Royal Navy.

He was promoted Surgeon Commander (D) in June 1956 and in 1963, he joined the carrier HMS Victorious, deploying to the Far East during the period of Confrontation with Indonesia.

In 1967, he was appointed to the MoD as Assistant to the Director of Naval Dental Services and that December was promoted Surgeon Captain (D).

In 1974, he was appointed as Honorary Dental Surgeon to the Queen and in August of the same year, he was promoted Surgeon Rear Admiral (D), as Director Naval Dental Services.

Ted Cadman retired from the Service in September 1977 and was awarded the CB upon retirement.

Ted died after a short illness on 24 April 2010 and, having been twice widowed, is survived by Irene, his third wife, the two children and grandchildren of his first marriage and his stepchildren and step-grandchildren from his marriage to Irene - all of whom he lovingly welcomed as his own.

A most kindly and generous man who always held the interests of the Royal Navy Dental Branch close to his heart. He is sorely missed and remembered with great affection.
