New continental crust from post-collisional magmas

New continental crust is traditionally thought to be generated primarily by subduction zone magmatism, such as at the Andes. However, subduction magmatism is prone to be tectonically eroded and taken back into the mantle, leading to a mass deficit in estimates of crustal growth rates over geological time. By contrast, voluminous silicic intrusions formed after continental collision, termed post-collisional magmatism, have been disregarded as sources of juvenile crustal material, as they are thought to originate from melting and recycling of existing crust.
