Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the dialysis modality of choice for many regions. The application of innovative technology has led to the development of new PD devices that reduce the environmental and economic costs of the therapy, as well as miniaturized devices that provide greater freedom for patients.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is estimated to affect 10% of the world population, with a higher prevalence among elderly individuals. The global uptake of kidney replacement therapy is expected to increase in the next decade to coincide with a projected increase in the global burden of CKD1. The increasingly ageing population, rising health-care costs and greater focus on patient choice and environmental awareness have led to a notable increase in the uptake of home-based dialysis modalities, particularly peritoneal dialysis (PD) within regions in Asia. This increase in the uptake of PD has been driven by a number of factors, including the scarcity of organs for transplantation, the high cost of haemodialysis, lack of accessible haemodialysis centres and implementation of government policies that favour PD. In addition, the environmental impact of dialysis is enormous as a result of the vast amounts of water and electricity that are used and waste generated, resulting in a considerable carbon footprint2.
