In many patients with cancer, tumour cells that spread beyond the primary tumour can enter a state of dormancy upon arrival at the distant site, only to awaken years later and initiate metastases. This pause in cancer progression is both a clinical threat and a singular therapeutic window to prevent future metastases. However, the study of dormancy has been challenged by the lack of tools to track dormant disseminated tumour cells (DTCs) inside a living organism.
