What evidence is there for the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with periodontal disease to decrease the risk of prosthetic joint infections?

Abstract

Design Systematic review.

Study population The present study evaluated articles about patients with prosthetic joint infections after the surgical procedure and the correlation with periodontal disease.

Data analysis The evaluation was performed using case reports and previous systematic reviews.

Results In this study, the authors did not include studies using qualitative analysis. They did not find studies which correlated periodontal disease with the development of a prosthetic joint infection.

Conclusions In conclusion, the authors did not have evidence to support or exclude the need of antibiotic prophylaxis as a means to decrease the risk of prosthetic joint infections in patients with periodontal disease.
