This is the second edition of a book which is an easy-to-use guide for oral and intraosseous lesions which may be encountered by the paediatric patient. It provides a good overview of a number of conditions. Clinicians should note that the book is American and as such the terminology (eg etiology vs aetiology) and treatments can differ in America to those used in the United Kingdom.

Part One forms the bulk of the book and papillary lesions, oral ulcers, perioral lesions, white and red macules and patches, gingival lesions and pigmented lesions are discussed. For each condition, the clinical appearance, aetiology, location, differential diagnosis and treatment are covered. The clinical photographs of the various lesions are of high quality and invaluable in the field of oral medicine. Conditions covered range from commonly encountered aphthous ulcers to those thankfully rarer sinister lesions such as rhabdomyosarcoma which require biopsy for diagnosis. Summary boxes help the clinician differentiate between similar lesions at a glance.

Part Two covers the mucosal manifestations of systemic diseases, habits and abuse and haematological disorders. Gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn's, those associated with nutritional disorders (eg iron deficiencies) and haematological disorders (eg leukaemia) are covered. Lesions associated with various types of immunosuppression are outlined; for example, HIV. Indicator of abuse - physical, sexual, and child neglect - are highlighted to clinicians. Characteristic oral features of eating disorders, smoking and illicit drug use are also included.

Part Three has ten sample cases - for each case, there is a clinical history, photograph, the differential diagnosis, and how the patient was diagnosed and managed. It would have been beneficial if there were questions to aid the reader in coming to a differential diagnosis but it is still a useful addition to the book.

Overall, the book provides a good overview and the pictures throughout help the practising clinician reach a diagnosis. It would be more suited to a general dental practitioner or community dentist than one in specialist practice since it does not go into vast detail for any condition.
