Founding

Founded in 2012, the African Caribbean Dental Association (ACDA) emerged from a collective of dentists practising in Kent, who recognised a growing demand for improved oral health awareness within minority groups in the United Kingdom.

The ACDA Executives

The ACDA was founded with a central goal of advancing, maintaining, and safeguarding oral health within ethnic minority populations, notably focusing on African and Caribbean communities. Its mission is to tackle disparities in oral health awareness and enhance the welfare of these groups. Presently boasting over 200 members, the association actively invites dental professionals who resonate with their principles and endorse their objectives to become part of their inclusive community, irrespective of ethnic background.

Notable accomplishments

ACDA's notable accomplishments include:

  • Hosting educational and networking gatherings for dental professionals, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and the enhancement of skills

  • Providing assistance to members encountering professional or personal difficulties through charitable efforts and moral and financial support

  • Holding a meeting with the Special Adviser to the Prime Minister (Theresa May) on Social Justice, Youth, and Opportunities at Number 10 Downing Street

  • Offering mentorship and pastoral care, resulting in three students gaining admission to dental school and one student gaining acceptance to a dental technician college

  • Sponsoring the training of a Mental Health First Aider in 2021.

ACDA's objectives

  • Tackling disparities in health and wellbeing

  • Advocating for diversity within the dental profession

  • Supporting members through mentorship, networking events, and pathways to success.

ACDA organises various events and activities such as:

  • Initiating programmes that promote oral health awareness among specific ethnic minority communities

  • Collaborating with educational institutions, secondary schools, and colleges to offer mentorship and emphasise the importance of oral health among young individuals

    Sponsoring the training of a Mental Health First Aider

  • Hosting educational events and webinars covering a wide range of topics, including clinical cases, business studies, and the latest advancements in products

  • An annual dinner event, scheduled for 23 November 2024, to commemorate the achievements of the association and facilitate networking opportunities

  • Bi-monthly CPD webinars.

The ACDA serves as a guiding light for dental professionals dedicated to promoting oral health equity via community involvement, mentorship, education, and a nurturing network.
