A regular financial health check is recommended for all dentists keen to ensure their ongoing profitability. This is the advice of the team at Ross Brooke Dental, the specialist dental business and accountancy service, who offer an annual business review for their dentist clients.

Linda Giles and Nathan Poole, co-founders of Ross Brooke Dental, will sit down for at least an hour, sometimes as much as a day, to review the financial performance of dentist clients. It's an opportunity, says Linda, to carry out a financial analysis as well as setting plans in place for the year ahead.

Her colleague Nathan says there are nearly always ways in which they can help identify changes that will improve profitability. He adds: 'But the aim is not just to look at the bottom line, it's to help improve the well-being of clients, by focusing on what's important to them.'

Linda agrees: 'When you are close to a business, working in it on most days, it's easy to forget to stand back and get some perspective on what is working well for you and what needs adjusting. Our clients leave the meeting feeling much more positive about their work and their plans.'

Their recommendation that all dentists should have an annual financial health check coincides with the second anniversary of their official launch, when the two highly experienced specialist accountants, began working together as a dental arm of UHY Ross Brooke, a large accountancy business in the Thames Valley.

Based in Abingdon, Ross Brooke Dental is now a team of six people whose sole focus is supporting dentists and orthodontists, delivering a highly bespoke service, also including payroll, specialist tax advice and working with clients' financial advisors to deliver a joined-up approach.
