1952-2022

Born Robert Leslie Morgan in Crickhowell, South Wales, but known to his friends and colleagues as Bob, he graduated from Birmingham Dental School in 1975. Meeting his future wife Suzanne in Freshers week, they went on to establish Morgan Dental Practice in Halesowen, West Midlands in 1977, where he worked until his retirement from clinical dentistry in 2012. In the previous year, he was taken seriously ill, needing emergency surgery followed by serious medical complications, but he overcame all odds with wonderful care from the NHS.

Bob was known for his passion for postgraduate education and his inspiration to younger colleagues, as a Postgraduate Tutor, Associate Dental Dean and awarded the MFGDP(UK), examining and teaching in the UK,Nepal, Hong Kong, India and Egypt. His work for the Faculty included the development of the MJDF qualification. He became an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Warwick and Kent, was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the FGDP in 2012 (gaining FDS in 2008) and was actively involved in Dudley LDC for over 30 years.

Bob loved skiing and was a conversational French speaker, spending many family holidays there. He became Chair of Belbroughton Parish Council, President of the local Round Table, and ran the London and Paris Marathons. A fan of Welsh Rugby, a keen photographer, gardener and renowned party host, he even made the Guinness Book of Records in 1982 for driving around Britain.

Bob was a special man, kind, generous and undoubtedly stubborn, but a role model for the profession in his devotion to lifelong learning. More recently, Bob loved tending his garden and beautiful roses, vegetable plot and dahlias, surrounded by his family and eating one of his wife's delicious roasts!

He passed away on 14 July at Worcester Royal Hospital surrounded by his family and flowers from his beloved garden. He is survived by his wife Sue, daughter Sarah who is a Hygienist and serves on the Council of the College of General Dentistry, son-in-law Jamie, and two granddaughters Georgia and Louisa who accompanied Bob Gruffalo Hunting in the nearby woods with 'Gruffalo Grandad'.

Bob will be missed by colleagues and friends locally and nationally, and the packed congregation at the funeral bore testament to his life.
