As the first ever female Honorary Secretary of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BAOMS), Kanwalraj Moar (pictured) is the face of change within the specialty. A Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH NHS Trust) specialising in cleft lip and palate surgery, Kanwalraj is no stranger to the responsibilities and influence of such roles. Over the last decade, she has built up extensive experience in a variety of leadership roles involving BAOMS, CUH and in examination of the OMFS curriculum.

Prior to starting as the clinical lead of one of the nation's ten specialist cleft services, Kanwalraj was nominated by CUH to compete for entry into the Nye Bevan NHS Leadership programme at the NHS Leadership Academy. She was one of only two surgeons appointed to her cohort. Shortly after graduation from the programme, Kanwalraj was recruited as a Divisional Director at CUH for Women's & Children's services, her current role. She secured a scholarship to study at the Cambridge Judge Business School, the business school of the University of Cambridge. Kanwalraj is now looking forward to studying for an MBA to extend her experience into executive Clinical Leadership & Management.

Previously, Kanwalraj was the BAOMS Council representative overseeing its Equality, Diversity & Inclusion programme. She is also the current President of the Society of Women in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (SWiMS), which now has over 120 members. Of all her clinical and managerial roles, Kanwalraj said: 'I am fascinated about what makes organisations deliver, and am passionate about building team diversity. I believe true leadership is about giving everyone a voice - and listening to it'.
