1960-2020

It is with great sadness that we report that Nigel Bourne died on 28 December, having been diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2019.

Nigel was in partnership in general practice with his friends and colleagues John Thorpe, Martin Hargreaves and Barry Devonald in Lincoln since qualifying in 1982; a long and very happy relationship full of respect, love and fun. The partners and their wives enjoyed many holidays and happy times together, always full of laughter.

Nigel was an accomplished sportsman having been a keen rugby player, an extremely competent sailor, water-skier, windsurfer and snow-skier, all capped off by having a black belt in Aikido and blue belt with red stripe in Taekwondo. He served for several years in the Territorial Army and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor life, training and experiences he had whilst serving.

Professionally, Nigel was very experienced in advanced restorative reconstruction, sedation and general anaesthesia (where he had been registered with the Royal College of Anaesthetists), but his real love in dentistry was orthodontics where he was on the specialist register. He was, for many years, a clinical assistant in the orthodontic department at Lincoln County Hospital. There are countless patients who enjoyed his skills in caring for them and also creating beautiful smiles.

He served on the LDC for well over 20 years, being the Chair from 2009-2013, and he advised regionally on orthodontics. He would give very sound advice after listening to all the opinions of others. He served as Secretary and then Chair of Lincoln BDA Section, of which he was a great supporter.

Nigel will be greatly missed by all his friends, colleagues, staff who worked with him, patients and, of course, his loving family.

We all send our deepest love and condolences to Diane and their three lovely daughters Harriet, Eleanor and Verity.
