In March 2023, Peninsula Dental School hosted its first BDSA Conference. The event brought together 300 students from dental schools around the country for an unforgettable weekend. It was packed full of inspiring lectures, the highly anticipated Harry Potter Ball and a trade show with many of dentistry's top sponsors making the journey. The weekend was a resounding success and it couldn't have happened without the Local Organising Committee and the staff at Peninsula Dental School. Their support and commitments to this event were remarkable and the hospitality they provided was outstanding.
Ewen McColl, Director of Clinical Dentistry at Peninsula Dental School introduced the Conference on Saturday morning with a warm welcome to Plymouth. Following the address from the BDSA President and myself as the organiser, Smile Academy commenced their three-part lecture series discussing composite techniques, anterior restorations and a discussion outlining how they built their brand and business into the success it is today. The talk from Smile Academy included fun and engaging activities such as mini competitions and a dentistry-themed twist on blind dating, allowing many of the delegates to get involved. We also had talks from renowned dentists such as Dr Gina Vega, Dr Alfonso Rao and the Dean of the College of Medicine and Dentistry, Professor Maher Almasri. They all delivered unique and personal accounts of the work they have completed in their field and demonstrated the ever-evolving profession we are lucky to be a part of. The first day closed with one of Plymouth's many inspiring lecturers, a crowd favourite, Professor Jim Carey. He gave the BDSA's first lecture on hypnosis and how he uses this in his clinical practice. As the first day came to a close, the arena was transformed over just three hours into a venue replicating the Hogwarts Great Hall.
