A student guide to managing facial swellings

Acute swellings can arise in a variety of anatomical sites, some presenting as localised dental abscesses intra-orally, or more serious extra-oral cervicofacial swellings due to spreading tissue space infection. In dental settings, cervicofacial infections commonly present due to an odontogenic source. The first encounter of a patient presenting with a facial swelling can be daunting, however, it is essential to develop confidence in the safe and appropriate management of these cases.
