3rd molar surgery and consent

Mandibular 3rd Molar Surgery (M3MS) continues to be an area of confusion for clinicians practising general dentistry today. This may, in part, be owing to the limited experience in managing cases of wisdom tooth extraction in university meaning that students feel a lack of confidence when they transition into practice. Furthermore, many dentists are concerned with the prospect of litigation associated with this procedure and seek to refer patients with impacted wisdom teeth instead of treating them in practice. In this article, we aim to highlight the reasons behind M3MS, discuss the treatment options available and outline the ethical considerations in the consent taking process.
