Now in its fifth year, the Dental Clinical Skills Competition - brainchild of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and sponsored by Dentsply Sirona - is open to students from every dental school in the UK and Ireland. This year the competition attracted over 500 entrants - that's 50% of the final year dental undergraduate population, testament to the competition's growing reputation.
Restorative, Endodontic and Orthodontic techniques were tested, giving participants the opportunity to get 'hands-on' experience of the latest Dentsply Sirona materials. The test also included some areas that students hadn't encountered before, such as laparoscopy, implant placement and of course intra oral scanning, when faced with a CEREC Omnicam, the finalists showed their digital skills, making an excellent job of scanning the phantom heads. The students' bedside manner was also tested as they were asked to explain a prognosis to a 'patient' and outline appropriate treatment options. These kind of 'soft skills' are often overlooked, therefore to see this area featured in a student environment is a positive step forward.
