Pediatric research early career investigator bio

Upon returning to clerkships as a medical student, I struggled to decide on a clinical specialty, though I knew it needed to involve neuroscience. Although my adult medicine rotations did not fully match the environment, culture, or research questions I sought, I nevertheless prepared adult neurology residency applications. Pediatrics was my final clerkship and suddenly everything clicked. I appreciated the camaraderie and team-based culture, the holistic approach to treating children and families, and the resilience of pediatric patients in the face of substantial illness. My wife provided the invaluable and decisive advice that a specialty I was passionate about was worth a few weeks' scramble to change my residency applications.

I became a pediatric neurology resident at the University of California San Francisco, where I was fortunate to work closely with many inspiring clinician-scientists, including neonatal neurologists Drs. Donna Ferriero, Hannah Glass, Dawn Gano, and Yvonne Wu who were equally talented at cutting-edge academic research and compassionate family-centered care. Realizing that fetal/neonatal neurology was the perfect intersection between developmental neuroscience and clinical care for a vulnerable patient population in need of novel therapeutics, I aimed to follow in their footsteps.
