Abstract • 42
Three main approaches to definitions of QoL have been recognised:
The Multidimensional approach emphasizes the interaction between the individual's physical health, level of independence and social relationships.
The decision-making approach includes the idea of expressing the benefits of treatment in terms of well-years.
The Goal orientated approach focuses on perceived differences between an individual's hopes and expectations and their present experience.
Advantages and disadvantages of these approaches will be discussed and a number of simple measures for use with children and their parents are described.
