Abstract
13C NMR measurements were carried out for poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and poly(butylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PBN) in the solid state in order to investigate the effect of drawing on their structures of PEN and PBN. NMR spectra of undrawn, pellet and melt quenched PBN’s were very similar to one another. From the results of DSC and the half time of crystallization measurements, it was found that the rate of crystallization of PBN is so fast that the crystalline phase is formed in the PBN samples. Drawing of PEN and PBN films caused down field shifts of chemical shifts for OCH2, CH2 and C4a,8a carbons. For PEN, the structural change from amorphous to α phase takes place by drawing. Chemical shift change arose from the structural change from amorphous to oc phase. For PBN, the crystal structural change from α to β phases occurs. It was concluded that the change in crystal structure caused by drawing leads to the down field shift of chemical shift for PBN.
