Abstract
BECAUSE of the anomalous position of the Idaho batholith within the pattern of Cordilleran intrusive rocks (Fig. 1) it figures in several schemes for the tectonic evolution of west-central North America1–3. In undertaking a palaeomagnetic study of the Idaho batholith we reasoned that, if the batholith always had reacted to tectonic stresses as a coherent mass, directions of remanent magnetization within it could be used to reconstruct its tectonic history. Such an approach has proved useful in the southern Cascades of Washington4,5, and earlier work in the Sierra Nevada batholith of California6–8 was also encouraging. A similar study9, partially completed, of an early phase of the Southern California batholith also indicates internal consistency of remanent magnetization directions over a wide area.
