Abstract
OBSERVATIONS from the Uhuru satellite1 have been used to compile a catalogue of 116 discrete cosmic X-ray sources in the 2-6 keV energy range. Many of the weaker Uhuru sources are at high galactic latitudes and may represent a hitherto undetected population of extragalactic X-ray emitters2. Some are near the positions of rich clusters of galaxies1; of these, three (the Coma, Virgo and Perseus clusters) contain bright radio galaxies thought to be active sources of high-energy cosmic-ray electrons. We propose similar “radio identifications” for two further Uhuru sources, and suggest that they are produced by inverse-Compton losses of electrons which have escaped from radio galaxies.
