Abstract
A BALLOON borne telescope, sensitive to gamma radiation above 50 MeV, was flown from Palestine, Texas, on January 9/10, 1971. The apparatus, a development of an earlier model1, consisted of an optical spark chamber triggered by a counter telescope and will be fully described later. The spark chamber now has 70 gaps and a sensitive area of 2,500 cm2. The balloon reached ceiling at 02.30 UT and floated at an altitude of 119 × 103 feet (4.9 grms) until cut down at 07.00 UT. During the period between 03.30 UT and 06.20 UT the telescope was steered to within ± 10° of the Crab Nebula.
