Neutrophil clearance keeps the beat

Neutrophils follow daily cycles of egress from and migration back to the bone marrow. As described in this study, neutrophils that have been recently released from the bone marrow express high levels of CD62L (also known as L-selectin), whereas aged neutrophils are CD62Llow. CD62Llow neutrophils also express high levels of CXC-chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4; the receptor for CXC-chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12), which is a major recruitment and retention factor for haematopoietic cells in the bone marrow), and this aged population of neutrophils is cleared from the circulation towards the end of the daily resting phase of the animal.
