The technique used by Mathis and colleagues involves the tracking of injected magnetic nanoparticles by real-time, whole-body MRI. This enables non-invasive monitoring of the microvascular changes in the pancreas that accompany insulitis and diabetes, such as vascular swelling and cellular infiltration. By monitoring NOD mice in this way, the authors could retrospectively separate the animals into a 'pre-diabetic' group that eventually developed diabetes and a 'non-diabetic' group that did not. They then looked for differences between the MRI scans of these groups and were able to identify two main MRI signals, the strength of which predicted eventual diabetes development in NOD mice.
