Acetylcholine Noise in Tissue Culture Muscle Cells

Abstract

ELECTRICAL shot noise fluctuations are produced at the motor endplate by steady streams of acetylcholine (Ach) molecules1–3 and at photoreceptors by steady streams of photons4. These fluctuations appear to be the result of the statistical opening and closing of elementary units of ionic conductance in the excitable cell membrane. Analysis of such shot noise fluctuations gives information about the magnitude of the elementary conductance unit and the kinetics of the activation of these units during membrane excitation.
