Abstract
ION transport in cell membranes probably depends upon the presence of polar ionic proteolipid complexes. An interesting, hitherto neglected model for the study of ion transport is the mesomorphic lipid-water phase. Systems of this type have been studied by various spectroscopic methods and their structure and properties established at the molecular level. The phase permits the study of the diffusion of ions through an aqueous region organised arnund polar groups. The effect of the width of the aqueous channel and of the hydration of the polar groups may be studied by varying the phase water content.
