Abstract
THE division of immunocompetent lymphocytes of mammals and birds into T (thymus-derived) and B (bursa-equivalent derived cells occupies a central position in current immunobiological research. Dissection of the multicomponent immune responses, in which these cells play distinctive roles (see refs 1–3 for reviews), has been greatly facilitated by the definition of a variety of cell surface markers which distinguish these two classes of lymphocytes and possibly their subsets (reviewed in refs 4, 5). The selective expression of these cell surface molecules, as well as distinguishing physical parameters of charge and adhesiveness, also provides an efficient basis for purification of T and B lymphocytes6.
