Antibodies to Simian C-type Virus Antigen in Sera of Gibbons (Hylobates sp.)

Abstract

ANTIBODIES to herpes-like virus antigens in several species of non-human primates have been detected by immunofluorescent tests1–3, but antibodies reactive to simian C-type virus antigens have not been reported in the sera of any primate species. Two simian C-type viruses, isolated from spontaneous primate tumours, were recently described as possessing the characteristics of known RNA oncogenic viruses4, 5. The oncogenicity of one of the viruses, the woolly monkey sarcoma virus, was demonstrated by its ability to induce tumours in newborn marmosets6.
