Cell Surface Properties and the Expression of SV40-induced Transformation

Abstract

WHEN SV40 infects the permanent mouse embryo line, Balb/3T3, it can transform the cells' growth properties in a number of ways1. Most commonly, SV40 transformants are selected for their ability to grow to high saturation densities2–4. These standard transformants which can also grow in agar suspension5 and in medium lacking serum growth factors (factor-free medium)6 synthesize virus specific tumour (T) and transplantation (TSTA) antigens7,8, and most of them release infectious virions after fusion with permissive cell lines9–11.
