Virus Similar to RD114 Virus in Cat Cells

Abstract

NATURALLY occurring lymphoma and sarcoma of the domestic cat are frequently associated with feline type C viruses1–8 which contain an antigenically identical group-specific (gs-1) antigen4–6 and reverse transcriptase7,8 but reveal similarities and differences between individual members with respect to viral envelope antigens9,10. In our recent attempts to induce an endogenous type C virus from cat cells, we isolated and identified a new virus with properties identical with RD114 virus. The latter virus was originally found in a tissue culture cell line derived from a human rhabdomyosarcoma after one in vivo transplant passage in a cat11. The repeated isolations of this virus from virus-free sublines of the Crandell cat cells provide strong evidence to suggest that the RD114 virus is a representative member of a second group of feline type C viruses which does not share the gs-1 antigen or other known genetic markers of the presently known viruses of the feline leukaemia-sarcoma complex.
